WoC Partners with Mission to Heal to Provide Outreach Medical Services and Training

Between 10th April and 11th May 2019, the Winds of Change Foundation (WoC) partnered with an American non-governmental organization (NGO) – Mission to Heal (M2H) – to provide training to health care professionals and perform general surgical procedures on patients in five health centers across Laisamis Constituency.

During our partnership, the M2H team, led by Dr. Glen W. Geelhoed – the founder of the NGO – worked in five health centers in the area, namely Gatab Hospital, Loiyangalani Dispensary, Kurungu Dispensary, Burri-Aramia Dispensary and Laisamis Hospital. The team engaged with nurses and clinical officers based at the hospitals and dispensaries to screen patients and conduct general surgical and dental procedures. Through these weeklong interactions, the focus for the M2H team was to conduct much needed medical procedures among members of the community, while ensuring skill transfer to local medical practitioners.

Over the five week period, the M2H team, together with the local medical personnel, performed minor surgical procedures on 121 patients and conducted 36 dental procedures. A total of 16 nurses underwent training on basic surgical and dental procedures including caesarian section deliveries. This training is expected to reduce mortality from treatable conditions in the region and reduce mother and/or child mortality from birth complications.

Feedback received from community members, M2H personnel and LTWP colleagues has been extremely positive. According to WoC Field Program Officer Aaron Lesiantam, ‘this initiative has had a transformative impact on people’s lives, who otherwise would not have been able to access the medical services provided’.
