In the months of July and August the Winds of Change (WoC) Foundation partnered with Rural Focus Ltd, a construction company specializing in water drilling in the northern part of Kenya. WoC selected the town of Namarei, in the north boundary of the Losai National Reserve, and the town of Merille, in the east of the Losai National reserve just south of the town of Laisamis.
In Namarei, the BH was drilled and equipped with a solar power pump. WoC also constructed three water troughs [cattle, goats and camels], an attendant’s house and 40,000 litre capacity tanks. The Namarei Borehole has come in handy in alleviating conflict over water for animals. Though the water is too salty for human use, it is safe for animals and thus has helped in supporting the other water sources [rock catchment], which were already in place.
The Merille borehole failed to produce the desirable water yield. WoC identified an existing borehole, three kilometers away, refurbished it and connected piping to the town. An additional 5,000 liter water tank was put in place together with a new water Kiosk for ease of dispensing the water to residents.
