On April 30, Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) hosted 120 Form Four graduates from Laisamis Constituency at our wind farm for a Youth Open Day, where we officially launched the Winds of Change (WoC) scholarship program.
The event was organised to introduce the new scholarship, for which applications opened on May 1, and to provide students with a firsthand look at careers in the renewable energy sector.
During the open day, graduates toured the wind farm while our engineers explained the electricity generation process. The students observed how wind turbines convert kinetic energy into electrical power that is then supplied to the national grid, providing a practical demonstration of their classroom lessons.
We then took them through a detailed presentation outlining the new scholarship program, covering its objectives, the role of community-led ward committees, and the specific courses and institutions it will support. The session also explained the structure designed to make the program accessible and community-driven.
Present during the session were Winds of Change Director Felix Rottmann and WoC Scholarship Fund Lead Peter Muchinju. They were joined by student leaders: Elizabeth Nairochi, President of the Rendile University Students Association; Gideon Lelerai, President of the Mount Kulal University Students Association; and Marcelino Amatalem, President of the Loiyangalani College and University Students Association.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Gideon Lelerai said, “I want to thank LTWP in a special way. You have taken on roles you did not ask for, and thank you for launching the scholarship today.”
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, where graduates received clarification on the scholarship’s eligibility criteria and application procedures. The Winds of Change scholarship program is designed to remove financial barriers to higher education and support the development of a skilled, local workforce.
