The job aims to support (i) supervision of and implementation of Lake Turkana Wind Power’s (LTWP) Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, and (ii) the day-to-day operations of LTWP’s NGO, i.e. Winds of Change (WoC). To do so, the ESG Officer will work closely with LTWP’s ESG Manager/WoC Director, gradually increasing his/her responsibilities over time.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the ESG Manager / WoC Director to implement their operational responsibilities, most notably:
- Relating to ESG:
- Oversee the upkeeping and effective implementation of LTWP’s Environmental and Social Manager System (ESMS). This requires close collaboration with the SMT, various Heads of Department (HoDs) and other departmental team members internally, and external partners such as financing parties, contractors, consultants, and project partners.
- Supervise/support consultants and contractors involved in all aspects of the Project’s operations to ensure compliance with project-specific ESMS.
- Ensure compliance with project-specific environmental and social audits, as carried out in line with the Lenders’ Common Terms Agreement and national legislation.
- Engage with the employer’s Lenders, Shareholders and Lenders’ Technical Advisor on all matters relating to ESG aspects, including the LTA’s bi-annual environmental and social monitoring visits and its outcomes (e.g. recommendations).
- Spearhead the preparation of LTWP’s Annual Sustainability Report for investors and other external stakeholders.
- Participate in management strategy sessions to continuously improve the company’s environmental and social (E&S) strategy and outcomes, as required.
- Contribute to the delivery of E&S training, primarily for internal stakeholders.
- Diligently compile data and produce and maintain regular reports to a high standard; and,
- Support in assessing and proposing areas for improved approaches to monitoring and growing the impact of our E&S initiatives and investments.
- Relating to WoC:
- Strengthening existing operating procedures and how they are implemented by WoC to identify, implement, monitor and hand over community development projects.
- Ensure implementation of WoC processes and procedures.
- Assess the current condition and impact of the WoC projects delivered to date, in collaboration with appointed external support, utilizing measurement criteria to be defined in due course.
- Develop and implement a system for the continuous measurement of the impact or outcomes of WoC investments, ensuring alignment with the Client’s strategic goals and community needs.
- Establish partnerships with external organizations (e.g., NGOs), with the objective of raising funds / implementing projects together.
- Oversee WoC’s finances, with support from LTWP’s Finance Department.
- Fundraise for WoC, so that the annual budget exceeds LTWP’s annual Euro 750,000 contribution.
- Contribute to the delivery of training, both for internal teams and for project partners.
- Supervise consultants and contractors hired to support WoC in specific projects / activities.
- Complete WoC related reports and ensure effective communication relating to WoC activities to internal and external stakeholders; and,
- Support / lead WoC Board Meetings and discussions about future strategies.
- Other Responsibilities:
- To support the behaviour of working as LTWP, sharing best practice, and collaborating with colleagues outside of your own sphere of business.
- To always act and behave in a way compliant with all LTWP company guidelines and policies, especially those relating to values and behaviours, environmental health and safety, ethics and codes of conduct, as it is through living our values that we strengthen the culture of our business and demonstrate our understanding of our Code of Conduct; and,
- Any other duties deemed necessary and relevant by the management in the smooth running of LTWP operations.
The above duties and responsibilities may vary from time to time and include any other responsibilities that arise during the company’s day-to-day business.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
1.Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, preferably environmental engineering, environmental or social studies, and/or a similar area.
- 3+ years of work experience in a related field (relevant sector, E&S and/or sustainability, etc.), preferably within an international E&S consulting firm, in a corporate E&S management role, and/or in development finance or private equity industry related to E&S components of project development.
- Knowledge and demonstrable experience of working with the IFC Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability, 2012.
- Effective organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize processes and schedules, develop sound project plans, conduct constructability, operability, maintainability reviews and juggle multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
- High level of intellectual curiosity with the ability to work independently in a self-directed, entrepreneurial environment.
- Ability to excel in a collaborative, technical, cross-functional and geographically diverse organization.
- Ability to work well in rural environments and collaborate with rural communities.
- Ability to travel regionally on a frequent basis to the wind farm.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Enthusiastic and proactive attitude with a willingness to learn.
- Strong presentation/public speaking skills required; and,
- Strong written and spoken English skills are required.
2.Preferred Requirements:
- Additional languages spoken, relevant to working in the region: e.g. Swahili, Samburu, Rendille and/or Turkana.
