Empowering the Next Generation: A Two-Day School Visit Program in South Horr

As part of our ongoing commitment to nurturing young minds, the Community Liaison team conducted a comprehensive two-day school visitation and mentorship program in South Horr on June 2nd and 3rd. The initiative took place at Nyiro Mixed Secondary School and Nyiro Boys Secondary School, engaging students in meaningful discussions on vital topics including life skills, career development, future planning, social life, and maintaining a healthy balance between academics and personal growth. The program also highlighted key areas such as academic success and mental health.

During the visits, the girls were encouraged to take pride in managing their menstrual health and were supported to understand and embrace this natural biological process. Boys were sensitized to support their peers and foster an environment of understanding and respect.

Nyiro Mixed Secondary School has 112 students in Form Three and Form Four while Nyiro Boys Secondary School has 130 Form Four students. This two-day program aimed to foster environmental awareness and inspire students to explore careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). By connecting classroom concepts to real-world applications, the initiative sought to ignite curiosity and empower students to become agents of positive change in their communities.

The sessions focused on seven core areas: career choice, self-awareness, study habits, discipline, time management, leadership skills, and life experience. Additionally, students were introduced to the Winds of Change (WoC) scholarship program, designed to support bright and ambitious youth. The team also promoted awareness about an upcoming dental camp scheduled at South Horr Health Centre from June 15th to 19th, 2026, organized by Health Yetu in partnership with Winds of Change.

Our team also explained the structure of the LTWP/WoC needs assessment process, clarifying how community needs are evaluated and addressed, which was well received and appreciated by the students. The schools’ responses were highly encouraging, with both institutions expressing interest in being included in future student open days and engagement initiatives.

The students’ interest in visiting the wind farm demonstrates that the message is resonating. Their enthusiasm for engineering and renewable energy careers underscores the program’s positive influence. Their desire to see renewable energy in action affirms the impact of these engagements.

Students were encouraged to become peace ambassadors within their communities, emphasizing that societal progress depends on three pillars: good governance, environmental sustainability, and peaceful coexistence. The students actively participated in discussions, demonstrating a strong desire for mentorship and guidance – with many students sharing their aspirations during the interactive Q&A—from teaching to engineering. These visits concluded on an inspiring note, with students expressing their ambitions and the team leaving motivated by their enthusiasm.

Moreover, students identified several community projects implemented by Winds of Change within their villages, highlighting the visibility and relevance of our community support initiatives. They also expressed appreciation for the grow house projects established in local secondary schools, which support community development and youth empowerment.

As the examination period approaches, the team reaffirmed its commitment to broadening the horizons of young learners and providing them with knowledge that is both globally relevant and locally impactful. “We look forward to visiting more schools, engaging with young minds, and planting seeds for a sustainable and innovative future.”  Emphasized Nicholas, one of the visiting team members.
