LTWP hosts high school students from Laisamis for a day of learning

On July 26th, we hosted 146 high school students and 24 teachers from across the Laisamis constituency for an Open Day. The event, designed to bridge classroom learning with real-world application, offered students a unique, hands-on experience in the renewable energy sector, crucial for shaping their future academic and career paths.

Participating schools included Laisamis, Merille, Nyiro Girls, Nyiro Boys, Logologo Girls, and Ngurunit Secondary Schools. Students embarked on a comprehensive tour of our facility, which boasts a nameplate capacity of 310 MW.

They got up close to our turbines, witnessing firsthand how we harness the area’s powerful winds to generate clean energy. LTWP Chief Technical Officer, John Chege, and our technical team explained how wind energy is harnessed and converted to power, which is then fed into the national grid.

Igniting dreams

The Open Day proved invaluable, especially for high school students on the cusp of making critical decisions about their academic futures. Experiencing the wind farm firsthand helped them visualise potential careers in the rapidly growing renewable energy sector – from engineering and technical roles to environmental science, project management, and data analysis.

Many students expressed a newfound interest in engineering and its significant role in sustainable development, with several inspired to pursue related courses. This event successfully bridged classroom learning with practical application, potentially igniting the spark for the next generation of renewable energy engineers and technicians.

LTWP itself is a testament to the local opportunities within this field. With a total of 302 employees, 99% of whom are Kenyan nationals. Furthermore, 81% of our total workforce are local employees from Marsabit County, demonstrating a strong commitment to community empowerment and local talent development.

Beyond inspiring future talent, LTWP plays a critical role in Kenya’s energy landscape. In 2024 alone, we contributed 10.89% of Kenya’s grid energy, delivering 1,367 GWh with a plant availability of 98.03%. Since our inception in 2018, LTWP has delivered over 10 billion kWh of clean energy to Kenya Power, equivalent to a reduction of over 4 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, a positive step toward environmental preservation, improving air quality and promoting a healthier planet.

This marks our second student Open Day at the wind farm in 2025, reinforcing our commitment to both national development and community empowerment.
