Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) demonstrated its commitment to women’s empowerment by hosting a special International Women’s Day workshop on March 5th, 2025.
The event brought together women from across the Laisamis constituency, including the regions of Gatab, Mount Kulal, Loiyangalani, and South Horr. Recognizing the vital role women play in their families and communities, LTWP organized a comprehensive health workshop seminar focused on reproductive health and community engagement.
The event aimed to sensitize women on the importance of understanding their maternal health, providing them with essential knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their well-being. A key focus was on empowering young girls in the community with information about sexual health, emphasizing the value of getting tested for STDs, HIV, and AIDS, and encouraging HPV vaccinations. The workshop also addressed the critical need to demystify myths and misconceptions surrounding women’s health that have historically plagued Marsabit County.
Participants received valuable education on the importance of hygiene and overall well-being, covering topics ranging from personal care to preventative health measures. The workshop created a safe and supportive space for women to ask questions, share experiences, and learn from healthcare professionals.
Josephine Hawo, a Community Advisor at Arapal, shared that the meeting had brought together women from Turkana, Rendile, and Samburu, which, she noted, had not happened before. She emphasized that the women had agreed in unison to return to their homesteads and implement all the teachings imparted to them, to their fellow women in the community, young women, and school-going children. She described it as a wonderful experience that Lake Turkana Wind Power had provided, stating that they had never experienced anything like it before and were very grateful for the impactful initiative.
Beyond health, Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) also addressed the critical importance of community engagement and peaceful coexistence amongst the often-rival communities within the Laisamis constituency. Recognizing that women are the glue of the family, the workshop emphasized their power to promote peace and stability within their households and the wider community. The message underscored the profound impact women can have, either positively or negatively, on their families and the importance of fostering unity and understanding.
Brenda Otieno, a nurse and medical practitioner employed by ResponseMed (the healthcare services provider at the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) clinic), said that through the health talk, she expected that the women, especially those present at the training, would seek medical attention whenever they suspected any cases of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. She also expressed her hope that they would start contact tracing early enough, so that they wouldn’t reach a stage where they could not get help anymore.
