LTWP’s Winds of Change hands over transformative facilities to Moite Primary School

A wave of jubilation swept through Moite Primary School on Saturday, January 17th, as the community gathered to celebrate the handover of truly transformative new facilities. The Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) ‘Winds of Change’ program, in partnership with Start a Library Trust, officially presented the school with a new administration block, a modern staffroom, and the school’s first-ever library.

Improving the lives of our host communities has been a fundamental part of LTWP’s ambition since before operations started. Since its establishment in 2015, our NGO, Winds of Change (WoC), has been at the heart of our community engagement and investment strategy. WoC has consistently empowered communities across Laisamis Constituency through targeted investments in healthcare, education, and water access, delivering high-quality projects designed to serve for generations. This latest initiative at Moite Primary underscores that commitment.

This project directly addresses long-standing challenges faced by Moite Primary, which serves 378 students with a dedicated team of 12 teachers. For years, teachers worked from a single, makeshift structure that inadequately served as both office and staffroom. The new administration block now provides teachers with essential amenities such as lockers, comfortable chairs, functional tables, and a dedicated, professional space conducive to planning and collaboration.

“Today we turn a page,” said Headteacher Mr Samuel Amuroe during the celebration. “Our new administration block gives us a dignified space to work, plan, and support our students. It’s more than just a building; it’s a foundation for better teaching and learning.”

The new administration block was furnished with lockers, comfortable chairs, and a functional table.

The event drew a host of distinguished guests and local dignitaries, including the Sub-County Director of Education, Mr Andrew Galgithele; representatives from Start a Library Trust; the LTWP Community Liaison Manager, Job Lengoiyap; LTWP staff representatives; the Deputy County Commissioner, Mr Stanley Kamanga; local chiefs; and the wider Moite community.

The handover ceremony was a vibrant community celebration. Students performed heartfelt songs and a poem of gratitude, while community members shared traditional songs and dances, praising the concerted efforts of WoC and its invaluable partners.

The school’s brand-new library is stocked with a carefully curated collection of books, specifically designed to build foundational literacy skills and spark curiosity. For many students, this represents their very first opportunity to explore a world of books within their own school compound, opening doors to countless possibilities.

Mr Galgithele commended the WoC program for its consistent, high-quality contributions to the Laisamis constituency. “Whether it’s a dispensary, a classroom, a borehole, or a laboratory, Winds of Change consistently delivers exceptional, durable projects that truly serve the people of Laisamis constituency for generations. Their work is truly incredible,” he said.

With these new facilities, Moite Primary School is not just receiving buildings, but a fortified foundation for enhanced learning and teaching. This project stands as another testament to WoC’s commitment to uplifting communities.

Since its inaugural project in June 2015, WoC has been at the heart of LTWP’s social impact, implementing high-quality, community-led projects across Laisamis Constituency, Marsabit County. To date, WoC has invested in initiatives that expand access to water, education, and health services, while also supporting livelihoods, peacebuilding, and emergency relief. These initiatives underscore LTWP’s dedication to fostering sustainable development and empowering future generations across the Laisamis constituency, ensuring a lasting positive impact for years to come.
